The Sermons of John Wesley
1872 Edition

(Thomas Jackson, editor)

Chronologically Ordered

The Foundery

A Word of Explanation

This index of John Wesley's Sermons attempts to arrange them in chronological order; that is, from his earliest written to his latest. The arrangement is based on the work of Timothy L. Smith and Albert C. Outler. Both scholars independently published chronological lists of the sermons. Smith's list provides the basic structure for our chart. Where there are disagreements between Smith and Outler, both scholarly views are given in italics. This explains why some sermons appear twice, once in the sequence of each scholar. ("The Means of Grace" actually appears three times in our list, because Smith assigns it two different dates.) When both Smith and Outler agree, we have left the script unitalicized and list the date only in Smith's column.

Within Jackson's collection on the sermons he included four sermons not written by John Wesley.  They are: "The Cause and Cure of Earthquakes," "On the Resurrection of the Dead," "On Grieving the Holy Spirit," and "On the Holy Spirit." Smith includes "The Cause and Cure of Earthquakes" by Charles Wesley in his list as well as "On Grieving the Holy Spirit" by John Gambold. Outler's list is composed of only those sermons by John Wesley himself, and thus the dates given for these sermons are Smith's only.  The sermon "On Predestination" was omitted from Smith's list and thus the date given for it is only that of Outler.  (The numbers in parentheses after each sermon title are those given in Thomas Jackson's 1872 edition of Wesley's Works.)

Smith's chronological list of the sermons is published in the Wesleyan Theological Journal (17, 2, Fall 1982). Outler's list appears in the Bicentennial Edition of the Works of John Wesley, Volumes I- IV, and is published by Abingdon Press.
